How To Take Your Dental Impression

Step 1. Brush teeth, then floss

Brush your teeth for approximately 2 minutes and then floss to help remove any food or plaque that may be stuck.

Step 2: Wash hands

Wash your hands with water and soap.

Step 3: Take photos of your teeth with the smile stretcher

Insert the smile stretcher and take the following photos of your teeth:

Lower Arch
Upper Arch
Open Smile
Closed Bite Smile
Natural Smile

Step 4: Wear gloves and take out your trays and putty

Put on the gloves. Take out one set of trays (1 x upper and 1 x lower) and four putty containers (2 blue and 2 white). Start with the upper tray.

Step 5: Mix Putty

Mix together 1 blue and 1 white putty to make a combined colour. When you start mixing, mix quickly! The mixture will set after about 60 seconds and it becomes too solid to take impressions. Therefore, get the putty onto a tray as soon as possible.

Step 6: Place putty into the upper impression tray

Roll the solid colour putty mix between your hands to create an even cylinder around 10cm long. Place the putty roll into the upper tray, making sure to fill the entire tray evenly.

Step 7: Take your upper impression

Place the tray in your mouth and push it up onto your teeth with a normal amount of force (not too hard but not too soft). Hold the tray with your thumbs and make sure it doesn’t move while making your impression. Bite down gently until a light amount of contact is made with the putty. Set your timer and wait 3 and a half minutes.

Make sure not to drag the tray when removing it as this can lead to double indentation. The optimal method for the upper tray is to pull down and then pull out and for the lower tray to pull up then pull out.

Step 8: Take your lower impression

Repeat steps 5 to 7 for the lower tray.

Step 9: Send photos to Beam for review

Before starting your next set of impressions, take photos of the two impressions you completed (1 x upper and 1 x lower) and send them to us at

We’ll let you know if there’s anything you need to change for your second set and answer any of your questions. Once you’ve heard back from us you can then proceed with taking impressions for the next set of trays.

Step 10: Repeat the process for the next impressions!

Repeat steps 4 to 8 for your second set.

Step 11: Ship your impressions to Beam

Insert the completed impressions and trays into the plastic bag provided. This will ensure they remain in good condition for their journey back to our dental lab. Then place the plastic bag in the prepaid satchel provided. Remove the tracking sticker on the prepaid satchel and keep for your reference in case there are any delivery issues. Send all 4 impressions back to Beam.

You’re now on your way to achieving your dream smile.
