What are braces on the back of teeth?

Braces on the back of teeth are also known as lingual braces. They are ceramic brackets and are bonded to the lingual side of the back teeth. This is an alternative to traditional metal braces. The advantages of lingual braces are that they’re less obvious, they do not require chewing on metal, and they can be used for adults with orthodontic problems.

How lingual braces (braces on the back of teeth) work?

Braces on the back of teeth, or as we’ve identified earlier, lingual braces work through a 2-step process:

  1. Computer Modeling & Simulation: An orthodontist uses a computer model before fabricating braces to your teeth.
  2. Braces Installation: Second, lingual braces are placed behind the teeth by connecting them with a wire that will move the teeth into a predetermined position.

Lingual braces vs regular braces?

Lingual braces are a popular alternative to traditional braces – you won’t have to worry about anyone spotting them. They’re great if you’re worried about self-esteem or swallowing issues, and can be more effective in some cases.

Are there any disadvantages to braces on the back of teeth?

There are a few downsides to lingual braces that you should consider before deciding if this is the treatment option for you. Some of the downsides include:

Cost

Lingual brackets (braces on the back of the teeth) are even more expensive than regular metal braces because they’ve got to be custom made and they’re not in silver, metal color like most braces.

Not always ‘invisible’

Although some people refer to them as “invisible braces”, they don’t always remain invisible. The elastics which attach to the top and bottom rows of lingual braces (braces on the back of the teeth) might look a bit ugly for some people.

Speech

Lingual braces have a short-term effect on a patient’s speech. Behind the teeth is where the tongue sits, and a lingual brace takes up some of that space, which can cause a change in speech. It takes practice but with time most patients’ speech will improve.

Do lingual braces (braces on the back of the teeth) take longer than standard braces?

Yes, braces on the back of your teeth can take longer than regular braces. The archwire attached to the front of teeth in traditional braces has the greater pulling power to move teeth into the position faster than a wire behind the teeth. Lingual braces require more regular check-up appointments than standard braces. The appointments are usually longer than appointments for standard braces so this contributes to the additional cost.
